WOW! This is my 30th Peaks to Portland on July 22.
I have seen the 2.4 mile swim grow from 25 to amost 500 participants. Back in l985, the race was over 3 miles long, the entrance fee was $5 to cover the cost of a bathing cap, no wet suits were allowed and there was no food at the end of the swim. We used rowboats and spotters and a stop watch at the end of the swim to record the time.
Today, the swim has an important purpose and that is to raise money for Y scholarships. Since this year is my 30th, my goal is to raise $3,000. If you haven't guessed it, swimming is dear to my heart and I believe everyone needs to know how to swim. After all, doesn't everyone want to swim in the beautiful Maine ocean?
Please donate to my swim this year and your money will reach out to the Greater Portland community to those who need help.
Hope to see you at East End Beach on July 22!
Thank you SO MUCH!
Each year we hold special events so the community can be engaged in a healthy way and to raise money for our financial assistance program. Athlete fundraising, donors, and sponsors are a key part in making our events a success. This year we plan on giving $1,700,000 in financial assistance to people of all ages and backgrounds -- but we can't do it alone!
The money raised for the YMCA Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids is crucial for the YMCA of Southern Maine to be able to help all kids reach their full potential through programs like swim lessons, summer camp, and child care. Because of you, we're able to give kids the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, regardless of ability to pay. We believe that together we can help all youth reach their full potential!
